Under FIFA’s usual pre-match protocol, national flags are spread across the field before kickoff. However, the Saudi flag was placed at a prominent elevated position instead of being laid on the ground.
The distinction is linked to the presence of the Islamic declaration of faith (Shahada) on the Saudi flag, which holds deep religious significance for Muslims.
According to Saudi traditions and regulations, placing the flag on the ground, stepping on it, or using it in a manner that could be perceived as disrespectful is considered inappropriate.
Keeping these sensitivities in mind, tournament organizers chose to display the Saudi flag at a raised location to preserve its dignity and religious significance.
The gesture has been widely viewed as a sign of respect for Saudi Arabia’s national identity and religious values.
